😊 Positive leadership PERMA lead in the police? I'm incredibly pleased that more and more police forces are interested in it, because I think it's the ideal approach to operationalizing good leadership.

🤗 I am pleased that I was able to make a small contribution to ensuring that the Police Hesse PERMA-Lead even more intensively in the future. Why?

1️⃣ PERMA-Lead has been scientifically proven to be effective in terms of performance, well-being, reducing staff turnover, sick days and much more. And we need healthy, high-performing and cheerful police officers and police chiefs.

2️⃣ PERMA-Lead is easy to explain and implement. Thanks to numerous companies that already use positive leadership, there are also numerous practical examples of implementation that invite you to copy and adapt.

3️⃣ There are great tools for measuring the implementation of PERMA-Lead and developing it further in a targeted manner.

❤️-Congratulations Police Hesse and from the bottom of our hearts to all colleagues: good luck on your journey!

And also a big thank you to the Chief of Police Torsten Krückemeier, who invited me to this event and also invited me to the this great article has written about this.

Certification as PERMA Lead Coach

Finally - I'm a certified PERMA lead coach and consultant 🤗

Since I published the book "Positive Leadership" by Dr. Markus Ebner have read (here to the current, extended edition)1I am a big fan of this management approach. Why? For three reasons:

👩‍🔬Erstens, because Positive Leadership - PERMA-Lead is scientifically sound and many verifiable studies have shown that implementing the leadership style has a significantly positive effect on performance, health (=fewer sick days), staff turnover and much more.

⚙️ Secondly, because it is easy to put into practice (if you want to) - the model is easy to understand and apply and there are numerous examples of good practice. It is about promoting positive emotions (P for Positive Emotions), using employees in a strength-oriented way (E for Engagement), creating sustainable relationships (R for Relationships), explaining the meaning of work and decisions, such as changes (M for Meaning) and consciously recognizing successes (A for Accomplishement).

☺️ Thirdly: Because it's fun. PERMA is contagious and not only proven to be good for employees, but also for managers themselves.

🔖 For this reason, I really wanted to delve deeper and went to Vienna with Dr. Markus Ebner on 13 and 14 June 2024 to get certified as a consultant. Together with a great peer group, we then solved numerous complex tasks, I was allowed to do my first evaluation coaching and since the final online session on September 10, 2024, I am now officially certified. This means that I can use all the great Test procedure for PERMA-Lead and coach with them. If you are interested, just get in touch 😉

Review of the Generation Z book

The current issue of pvt "Polizei Verkehr + Technik" contains a review of our book "Generation Z and Alpha. Understanding, winning, retaining. A guide for the police" published.

Here is a small excerpt from the review by Andreas Hohensinn, consultant at the Federal Ministry of the Interior in Vienna:

"Overall, 'Generation Z and Alpha' is a very informative and engaging book that makes an important contribution to understanding the coming generations. It provides a sound analysis and encourages reflection on the future of society and the police organization. For readers interested in sociology, psychology, futurology in a police context, this book is highly recommended."

Podcast: Generation Z in the police force.

In this 36-minute podcast I would like to give you a few brief insights into Generation Z in the police force. Who is this generation, is there even such a thing as "the" generation and why should we be careful with this big pigeonhole "Generation Z"? How can we win them over and, more importantly, how can we retain them?

If you would like to know more, here is the link to the review in our book: "Generation Z and Alpha. Understanding, winning, retaining - a guide for the police."

Generation Z and Alpha. Understanding, attracting, retaining - a guide for the police

Our book on Generation Z in the police has finally been published. In a time of rapid change, marked by technological innovation, global crises and new generations, organizations face the challenge of adapting and establishing contemporary ways of working. Our book takes a unique look at an area traditionally characterized by order and authority - the police. A police officer and an educator take on the subject. This unconventional collaboration creates a reflection on Generations Z and Alpha and the challenges they face in an environment that calls for new approaches.

The book is available directly from Publisher or with Amazon - and of course in any well-stocked bookstore. If you use the links here, especially the one to the publisher, you support my work, because then I actually earn something from the book ;-).

What our book offers:

  • a reflective understanding of the concept of generation and the younger generations
  • Clearly structured practical tips on recruiting and boarding, training design and employee retention
  • Strategic proposals for sustainable organizational development

About us Authors:

Police Director Dr. Bernd Bürger has been with the Bavarian Police for over 25 years and has been working intensively with the younger generations since 2015, both in his own leadership work and in numerous publications and lectures.
Heidi Ellner, Dipl.-Päd. univ., has been analysing how organizations and individuals learn for 20 years now. Through her work in the training of prospective police officers in the Federal Police, she is at the center of the relevant field of vision on a daily basis.

What happens next:

We will stay on the ball and publish further Article and perhaps there will be a second, updated edition. That depends on your interest and feedback.

Generation Z in the police force.

Certainly different or completely normal?

"Mit Sicherheit anders" ("Safety is different") - this is the slogan of the Bavarian police's current recruitment campaign (Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, Sport and Integration 2021). But does this also apply to Generation Z? Or is this a completely "normal" generation? And most importantly, is "Generation Z", as described in the major youth studies, also found in the police force?

Our article explores these questions on the basis of a master's thesis in which several training seminars (entry-level training) of the Bavarian police were surveyed using a standardized questionnaire. The reasons for applying to the police, the general expectations of employers and superiors and the specific expectations of the police in this respect were examined. In addition, a comparison was made between participants from different stages of training and older candidates. The results of the 2019 Shell Youth Study were used as a basis for comparison.

Austrian Federal Police research project

With a great team, we have been able to work under the umbrella of the GAWO (GAWO - Gesellschaft für Arbeits-, Wirtschafts- und organizationspsychologische Forschung e. V.) won the tender of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI).

In order to ensure an external scientific perspective on police developments from the reform of the police force in 2005 to the present day, the Federal Ministry of the Interior launched a research project on the topic of "20 years of the Federal Police in Austria. From the merger of the Federal Gendarmerie, Federal Security Guard and Criminal Investigation Corps from 2005 to the present day".

With a team of active and retired police officers with a scientific background and scientists with experience in police research, we were able to win the tender with our research concept. If you would like to find out more about this project, you can here in Public Safetythe magazine of the BMI. I am looking forward to the exciting task of managing this project.

Retirement lecture by Prof. Dr. Otto Adang

One of the most significant moments in my professional life. I had the opportunity to give a lecture on his life's work with regard to public order policing at the Politieacademie's international symposium "Mit aller Gewalt lernen" in honor of Prof. Dr. Otto Adang's retirement. And he is simply one of the forefathers of modern theories, so it was and is an extraordinary honor for me that he chose me for this task. It's a bit like being a fan of Michael Jackson as a child and trying to dance like him - and then being invited by him personally to perform at his farewell. It's amazing!

For over 20 years, I followed in the footsteps of Prof. Dr. Otto Adang, often without knowing it. Not only did I come to the same conclusions, we were often in the same places without knowing it - he as a researcher, I as a riot policeman. Eventually, my first book "The Role of the Police at Assemblies" brought us together, for which he contributed a chapter together with Dr. Martina Schreiber. He then invited me to teach in his "Public Order" module of the Master's program at the Politieacademie - and I was able to learn from the Grand Master himself - in pleasant, constructive, smart and far-sighted discussions over a good Dutch beer.

Thanks to Otto, I was able to structure my numerous practical experiences from over 20 years with the USK (as a group officer, group leader, platoon leader or command leader) or in the preparation, planning and implementation of major operations (G7 2015 and 2022), which I have already lectured on in many European countries as well as in the USA and Canada, even better. According to its principles: Know, Support, Communicate, Differentiate (for more see docbb.de or publicorderpolicing.com ), which really contribute to the success of police work in the context of crowds in an all-encompassing way.
